Gold Mining in South Africa
Driving along in Johannesburg one will see these huge flat mountain-like features. This picture was taken from the bus as we drove to Soweto. What appears to be a mountain is actually the tailings dug up from years of gold mining, a major industry in S. Africa that utilized cheap labor in the mines during the apartheid era. Environmentally they pose a problem because of cyanide leaching.
